Their founder is the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences. Clinics carry out research, internships for residents, doctoral students, doctors and nurses, organize international conferences.

About the General Surgery Clinic

The base of the clinic is two general surgery departments with the sectors of abdominal surgery, coloproctology, vascular and surgical infection, and a day surgery hospital. There are 50 beds in the subdivisions. The clinic provides specialized planned and emergency surgical assistance to patients with diseases of the abdominal organs, coloproctology and vascular diseases. Complex operations on these organs are performed, including reconstructive colon, laparoscopic and endoscopic surgical interventions. The clinic treats patients from all over the country. Most patients are from Kaunas city. The clinic treats over 3,000 patients a year and performs about 2,500 surgeries. Clinic staff have improved in leading clinics in the USA, Belgium, France, Germany, Denmark, the Czech Republic and Latvia.

The clinic teaches the basics of general surgery (movement, homeostasis and elimination, blood circulation, sensory and perception, infection and professional competence modules) in the 2nd-3rd year of the Faculty of Medicine, first aid for the 1st year students of the Faculties of Medicine, Dentistry and Public Health. Nursing faculty students study general surgery and surgical nursing at the clinic.

Every year, Lithuanian physicians receive training courses on laparoscopic surgery, enteral nutrition, acute abdominal surgery, pancreas, venous diseases and hernias.

The research topic of the clinic is the peculiarities of the diagnosis and treatment of surgical diseases in the elderly include the diagnosis and treatment of acute pancreatitis and acute appendicitis, enteral nutrition of patients with these diseases. The clinic has extensive experience in the use of sewing machines for abdominal surgery and the use of enteral feeding in surgery. The collaborators of the clinic are the authors of many textbooks, scientific articles and abstracts.

The Clinic of General Surgery cooperates with universities in Austria (Graz), Belgium (Ghent), Denmark (Copenhagen), USA (Wayne state), Sweden (Malmö, Lund), Hungary (Szeged), Germany (Frankfurt) and Poland (Krakow, Bialystok, Bydgoszcz) Surgical Clinics of Medical Academies, German (Bioblingen) Regional Hospital, Polish SPEN Society. Many of the clinic’s staff are members of German Surgeons, European Surgeons, European Gastrointestinal Surgeons and other Societies.
